Betty Stevens-Humphries, with husband, Jack Humphries, established the Cosmetology Institute in Florence, South Carolina in September of 1965. The school is the oldest continually operating cosmetology school in South Carolina that has maintained its original concepts and administration since its founding.

Since 2003, BSCI’s ownership has been under the supervision of Rita Andrews-Buck and her husband Ernest B. Buck II, “Ernie”. Mrs. Buck was an honor graduate from Betty Stevens Cosmetology Institute and was chosen to compete as a student on the state level. Her experience with beauty pageants, fashion shows, student team competition, and other civic projects has given her the experience to provide excitement and motivation for all students.
